Spencer began his brewing career at Bayhawk Ales, in Irvine, California, in 1995. After graduating with a degree in English literature from Long Beach State, he began volunteering at Bayhawk. Within two and a half years, he was the lead brewer responsible for 9000 bbls. of beer a year.

Spencer enjoys most things fermentable. To quote Spencer, "the best thing about brewing is the ability to make a product that people can enjoy (responsibly, of course)." In his off time, he also enjoys being outside, biking, hockey, family time, and especially food. Happiness is hearing your two and a half year old daughter asking "how was working today at the brewery, Daddy?"
